If you are regular in the field, I am sure you might know the fact that typographic decisions are based on spacing. This is incredible and has always been true with print industry and now has become applicable to web world. The advancement of CSS has one of the reasons behind the logic of spacing, whether we are talking about print or web form. In-fact there is mainly two directions by which one can control spacing
Horizontally
Vertically
Let us discuss both on detail...
Horizontal Spacing
I would like to move little technical in the field and so there are chances that I may use Jargons, but assure you that I will try to make the point clear. In the worst case if still there is doubt you can contact me via feedback and I will personally clear the confusion.
When it comes to Horizontal spacing Kerning and tracking are two common terms that are often heard. Kerning in the simplest term is the process of regulating the space between two particular letters. Now, when you have known the fact, you will notice that pairs of letters appearing too close are far apart. Web designers London cannot apply the rule of kerning everywhere as most of the fonts have already a set of rules that decides the spacing among precise characters. For instance consider Wa and WV the spacing for both the character is different.
Now, as writing for web copy is done on large scale and a five pages website contains a minimum of 5000 words. It is not less than impossible to make letter by letter kerning adjustment. So there is an option in CSS called as letter spacing.
After kerning let''s move to tracking, it adjust the horizontal spacing but well applies in between letter. If you are looking forward to have text written in open airy feel, just try adding pixel it will affect spacing. If your text is too tight, you can add negative value. It may reduce the legibility of the text. CSS also provides word spacing. It allows taking positive or negative length and minimizes the white space in and around.
Vertical Spacing
Vertical spacing often termed as leading in Print world. It finds its origin from early days of letterpress; here blank strips made of lead as a separator of two lines. And where there was no space left the set of line were called Solid. CSS has solution for this also and vertical space in CSS is adjusted by line height property.
